I’m scared to fly

My back itches because I am growing wings

I know soon that I will fly

But I am scared to reach the sky

I may fall and tumble down

Down so hard upon the ground

And be a wretched creature

With no one around

Because I flew too far

It would break my heart to be alone

Alone and without a home

It would be a never healing scar

I hope the sky will love me

And gently guide me down

And put me amongst the people

Who will keep me safe and sound

But right now I am scared to fly

Without a flock and although I try

I can’t bear to do it all alone

To follow those who have already flown

Will I get lost in the clouds, a punishment for being proud?

I fear to fly and yet I must

I have to in God trust

That I will be safe and sound right there

Right up there in the air

Inktober 2018 – Day 5 – The Mermaid

Mermaid

Yes today is the 5th day of Inktober and as you can see I have chosen a mermaid for my theme of the day!

Everybody knows what a mermaid is, but do you know what they are really like?

They aren’t what you see in Disney movies according certain world folklore and that’s for sure!  They don’t go around singing at mortals and wishing they were humans and fall in love you know, well actually they do sing at mortals and when they do it’s a sign you really should block your ears and get out of that ocean and according to some legends, they do sometimes fall in love with mortals too, but it’s not all pearls and coral – oh no!

Mermaids from Ireland were called Merrows and they were supposed to be ugly creatures, with green hair, scales, and claws and were evil critters by all accounts.  They had a penchant for falling in love with beautiful human men and would often kidnap them to take them into the sea to drown them so their spirit could live with them in the other realm or they would take on the appearance of a beautiful human woman and breed with him on land and disappear with or without her offspring and the groom.

In Russia they have the Rusalka which can be either benevolent or evil depending upon the individual, you could never tell what a Rusalka would be like if you saw one, so it was best to keep away from them.  It is thought they were the spirits of young girls who were horrendously killed or had violent accidents, if their death was caused by a rape and a murder it was said that those would be evil spirits to men, as any man who goes near her in her transformed self would be garrotted to death by her long hair!  Sometimes women who are in danger would become protected by the Rusalka from any man nearby who is about to harm her!

The Fin Folk of Norway and the Orkney Islands were often considered using humans as slaves and they only way to escape them were to throw coins of silver into the sea to distract them as they loved silver a lot!

So, the next time you think that mermaids are sweet endearing ladies of the sea, with shrill beautiful voices and you fancy taking your chances to get romantically involved with one – think again!

Inktober 2018 – Day 3

The monster – Frankie

Here’s Frankie, Frankenstein’s monster, the groom to the bride I did yesterday, it is a late post because today is my birthday and I very nearly forgot to do something for Inktober today!

What did you do for the 3rd day of Inktober?

Inktober day 2 – The Bride!

The Bride!

Inktober day 2 – The Bride of Frankenstein’s monster!

Colours used, black Indian ink, apple green, scarlet mixed with white and sunshine yellow for skin tone watered down, white, metallic-silver-aluminium for the bolts.

I was quite surprised at how I got the skin tone just right, I didn’t want her to look pale and pasty or green, I wanted her to look like the blood is actually flowing in her and that she is more of a success than the monster, because it would be Dr Frankenstein’s second attempt at replicating human life and as we all know – you get better with practise!

As a fan of horror I just had to do this scream queen, she’s a beauty and tomorrow I might plan to do her beast, “The Monster” himself.

Horror and mental illness

One or two of my poems have been considered to be short stories in my mind by me, I thought this was enough – however my husband and a friend of mine mentioned to me yesterday that some of my poems are moreish and therefore they feel that I should work on making them into a larger story preferably novel sized piece.

My husband is quite persistent about two of the poems I’ve agreed would make a better larger story, therefore he is straddling me to the grindstone and making me get to work on them because I’ve been procrastinating on my leprechaun comedy for eleven years now and I am losing enthusiasm for it.

I’ve been advised by a friend too, that my fantasy work is good, but my horror is better as I seem to write more freely and graphically, which shows that this is where my genre should be. Funny enough I originally was a horror writer, I only entered the realms of fantasy within the last decade in order to get a wider audience and I was mistaken with the idea that I would be more free to do my own thing – in horror you can do that, in most other genres there does seem to be a general protocol.

I tend to read fantasy and horror but usually horror prevails as a reading choice for me, so therefore I know that I am more experienced with horror; I also have a sadistic, black sense of humour and a lust for shocking people; which I guess makes the genre perfect for me.

I know a lot of people are getting tired of vampires but, they are my favoured creature. However, I do love writing about mental illness (considering I have experience there too) and so writing about the horrors of the mind comes easy for me – particularly if it is regarding cruelty and isolation.

The novel I am attempting to write whilst I put my leprechaun comedy on hold is based around the self-harming and mental illness of a young girl who lives within an asylum and how she got there and why, the book will concentrate on the horrors of the occult, social services, abuse and isolation. There is more to the story, but I am not going to give things away, there would be no fun in that now would there?

So forgive me if the blog is neglected for a while, my husband really wants this story written and I am looking at my previous work with fresher eyes and I am very enthusiastic about this one. Who knows, perhaps it will become finished enough for me to have the confidence to post it up for YouWriteOn.com?

Ciao for now.

Bloodstained clothing

Blood stained clothing I wear for eternity; blood of my victims churn inside of me:

The hungers that exist and cannot hide form me.

I wish there was something better than this.

A monster I am that prowls the night in search of a victim who I can kill with a bite; to drain them of life and – of their blood supply so my thirst can quench for just another night.

Blood stained my clothing of a thousand years.

A dead creature is I, in my heart and in my mind.

For I forget the feelings of mercy and the feelings of woe, but now I have killed so much-those are things I have forgotten to know!

No longer human in heart or mind, a creature of the dark who is cruel and emotionally blind.

I kill with great ease my human meals and dine on their life’s blood from their neck with their squeals!

Their bodies flop down as I take them away from this world they have begun to know; and fill their loved ones with a gallon of woe.

Each night and when my meal is done, I go off back to my grave and sleep so numb.

Till the dusk has arrived then I come out to play, to take another human away.

Kelpie

Glaring lights, pale as death, call you and me.

Dancing through the leaves of the night, dancing around the willows and the oak, hearing the sounds of mysticism in an endless voice of hope:

What is it that we evoke?

Rushing through the air of the night, filling our souls with curious delight; the moon shines upon us as we run after thee, O what can you be? What can you be?

The silver of the night can be what you are or a guiding star? Yes a guiding star!

You took us from our campsite when the air was chilled and harsh – you made us run bare footed across the country grass!

Nightly dew soaks our wandering feet and we search for where you go. Roaming free like a bird in the sky you fly, through the leaves of the trees in the night!

But we remain warm with your charms dear light.

Running endlessly we wonder where you take us. Miles and miles it seems… we run through the fields and past the stream, this feels like a wonderful dream!

Pure is your light of wonder, warm is your glow, but where do you take us, where do you go?

What are you which we evoke?

Faster and faster you run wild and free, past the streams and the tree’s and we run faster along with thee.

We hear a mystical voice again, calling like a choir, calling our names to follow still, even though the night is chilled!

Brighter and faster the light becomes running through the corn. We follow and run helplessly we become most forlorn!
The light has gone! The light has gone!

O where are we now?

As if it was all a dream we suddenly awake from the hypnotising light we are in the lake… we are in the lake.
Drowning, mourning sorrowfully, we cry and call for help. But all that hears our calls this night is the old mythical creature the Kelps!

All we do now is yelp and yelp!!!

Creature 2006

I wrote the below piece in 2006, however the original piece was done within ninety minutes and was never revised despite me putting it up on the lulu.com marketplace.  Ironically it sold 9 copies, unfortunately that’s all it did sell in the whole seven years it was on site.

In my humble opinion this revised copy of the book is far better.

It is a little long for a blog post, nine pages of an A4 sheet of paper when this is printed to be precise.

You can probably guess what the creature is before the end, as I don’t exactly leave it a mystery, but I hope you enjoy it.

I wanted to publish the revised copy of this book on lulu.com but I have found they no longer accept books which are less than 32 pages, so I couldn’t.

There is a creature on this planet which reaps more than it sows and causes fear to all other animals, birds and fishes because collectively they are merciless.

This creature tries to override natural laws, embittering themselves whilst destroying everything else that stands in their way.

It pollutes its own habitat, making trees fall all around them rendering other animals homeless, helpless and lost.

Everywhere this creature touches, becomes barren stony land, or so heavily polluted that it is spread thick with black goo called oil, the seas and oceans are turning black with the stuff they call “black gold”.

They consume both meat and vegetables, eggs and even fill their bodies with toxins and chemicals without a thought of what it might do to them.

They try to deny nature to touch them, living in stone boxes, avoiding feral behaviour, denying they’re an animal too, they try to outwit death and prolong their already long lives with unnatural means.

They fell massive forests; day after day after day, nothing is safe, thousands of miles a year doomed to become barren wastelands.

They don’t always do this for food and shelter alone, but for the sake of owning more than their companions, making things that are unneeded for natural survival and like termites they sweep across the Earth like a plague causing nothing but mayhem and destruction; though, they see it as construction.

They hunt other creatures on a mass scale, hundreds become extinct a decade because of this foul creature, bird, fish, insect, mammal, reptile, nothing is safe.  They hunt for food, clothing, trophies, decorations and fun, or simply because another creature seems to become successful too, this is not allowed, nor is another creature allowed to trespass on their lands.

This is not all, this terrible creature I am telling you about will also kill themselves, their loved ones, their neighbours and even strangers, whilst preaching about rights and equality and love.  Oh yes, this creature is definitely paradoxically hypercritical.

What do they do to each other I hear you ask?

Strangulation

Shooting

Stabbing

Boiling each other alive

Setting each other on fire

Blowing each other up

Battery

Smashing heads with blunt objects

Hanging

Asphyxiation

Biological warfare

War

Cutting heads off each other

Eye gouging

Gut slashing

Throat cutting

Drowning

Staking

Forced starvation

Some don’t care why they do it, they just like to do that sort of thing, and others claim they do it for noble reasons, whether it’s religion, revenge or controlling the masses.

This creature isn’t limited to where it goes and where it can live, they adapt unfortunately, to extreme climates, they are making technologies to make cities under the sea and oceans and to even venture to outer space.

This creature can move mountains, hills, rivers, lakes, build them too, but they’d rather destroy, they clear fields and meadows, basically bleed the earth dry of all its resources, nutrients and goodness, turning lands into polluted graveyards of a once evergreen world.

This creature not only causes havoc with the living, but they also like to bother the dead as well, waking up spirits of their ancestors for conversations they call séances.

If vampires existed they would definitely hide in the shadows like the movies portray, because this creature will hunt it down and bring an extinction before you can say “oh my goodness, there’s a vampire in my street”.

Werewolves would think twice before they started to howl at the moon.

The poor loch ness monster hides for its life in fear of becoming the best trophy ever known to planet Earth!

The yeti and Sasquatch isolate themselves in snowy mountain tops simply to keep a peaceful life away from this horrible creature’s attention.

It is said that ancient gods even moved away from this creature to keep away from their vile creation, keeping their existence secret because they became slaves to the demands of their creatures, who corrupted, lied, cheated and used them for all but good.

Beautiful fur coats of the mink and other animals stripped off their flesh in a second because they’re beautiful; this creature wants to wear the fur on themselves, to imitate its beauty, rather than allowing the lovely creature to live and run around, so they can happily watch them.

This creature I am talking to you about, loves taking another creature as entertainment, making the little animals suffer with little tricks, being wrenched away from their families, castrated so they can’t breed, shoved into small cages, fed unnatural food, being pointed at and laughed at, controlled and humiliated day after day after day.

Some are forced to fight each other, others turned into slaves.

Insects squashed for the sake of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or being ugly… anything ugly in this world is anything dead or soon to be added to the extinction list!

This creature yearns to contact alien life forms, yet cannot tolerate each other in their own various colour formations, cultures, beliefs, languages and orientations.

This creature is….

HUMANITY

This was based on my old views on humanity; I have become more tolerant of them over the years, particularly as we seem to be doing more for nature nowadays and we are progressing socially into a more tolerant species.
